Microsoft Teams Client for Linux Confirmed

A Microsoft Teams client for Linux has been confirmed. The news follows Microsoft officials back in August asking Linux users to “stay tuned” for updates about whether they would even develop this client.

No date on a final version of this client has been announced, but Microsoft has said a preview will be available by the end of 2019.

Our Take

A Teams client for Linux is a good move by Microsoft. There has been high demand for the tool by Linux users, who called for a Teams client to be developed back in 2016. At present, Linux users only have access to a desktop app of Teams, and there have been plenty of complaints that this app is sluggish.

Moreover, one of Teams’ major competitors, Slack, already has a Linux client. A Teams client would not only open itself to new users but also continue to cement its place as the market leader in team collaboration. This gives good cause for Slack to worry, given that Teams has potentially surpassed Slack already in the number of daily users.
