Citrix Rebrands XenServer to Citrix Hypervisor

Citrix Hypervisor version 8.0 has been released. Consider using it to run Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops if you’re not already using XenServer.

According to its blog post, Citrix continues to recommend Citrix Hypervisor for clients running Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. The post also reiterates that Hypervisor is included in every Virtual Apps and Desktops edition and offering.

Citrix Hypervisor 8.0 also has updated features for high-performance computing, cloud, and general hypervisor use. It will support disks larger than 2 TB, a multitude of Linux distributions, and experimental support for UEFI boot for Windows VM.

The post also links to the complete list of updates.

Our Take

The primary use case for Citrix Hypervisor is to run Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. However, both products will run on third-party hypervisors. It makes sense, then, that Citrix is so heavily emphasizing these use cases rather than running it as a general hypervisor.

If you’re currently running these Citrix products on a third-party hypervisor, look at Citrix Hypervisor 8.0. Since it’s likely already included in your licensing, you might as well test it out. The updated features may convince you to migrate, which would potentially decrease your total cost of ownership.
