Google Cloud Next 2026: It's All About the Agents
Google Cloud Next ‘26 in Las Vegas wrapped recently, and the theme was familiar. If 2025 was the year of experimenting with agentic AI, 2026 will be the year of running it at scale. Thomas Kurian’s keynote title said it all in three words – “The Agentic Cloud” –and nearly every announcement, from the rebrand of Vertex AI as the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform to the eighth-generation TPUs to the Wiz-powered security stack, reinforced one pitch: Google owns the full stack, chip to inbox, and competitors hand you pieces. For IT leaders, the interesting question is no longer whether Google has a credible agentic offering. It clearly does. The question is whether you want a vendor’s integrated stack sitting underneath your agent fleet or you would rather compose your own. We think most organizations will end up leaning further into Google’s (or Amazon’s or Microsoft’s) stack, without really deciding to, over the next 18 months. Make that a deliberate choice instead.
The Rebrand of Vertex AI Stole the Show
Google renamed Vertex AI to the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, folded Agentspace into a unified Gemini Enterprise product, and positioned the combined offering as a “mission control” for agents. The new capabilities (Agent Studio, Agent Registry, Agent Identity, Agent Gateway, Agent Observability, and agent-to-agent orchestration) are the unified agentic enterprise control plane IT leaders have been looking for since generative AI went from a novelty to a potential liability. The name change itself matters more than most people realize, signaling that Google now treats “model platform” as a historical category. The unit of scaling is the agent, and the platform is the control plane around it. For buyers, this is a good way to look at what each vendor actually believes. Microsoft leans on Copilot and Azure AI Foundry. AWS leans on Bedrock AgentCore. Anthropic leans on Claude plus its own tooling. OpenAI leans on Operator and Codex. Google is the only hyperscaler that has bet hard on a single brand covering everything from silicon to the employee inbox.
Infrastructure: TPU 8t, TPU 8i, and the Arrival of Inference Economics
The eighth-generation TPUs arrived as a matched pair. TPU 8t is for training, and TPU 8i, the one IT leaders will care about, is for inference. Google claims it delivers roughly 80% better price performance on inference than the previous generation Ironwood, and it was purpose-built for running millions of concurrent agents at low latency. Google also confirmed it will be one of the first cloud providers to offer NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin NVL72 platform, a pragmatic move since most enterprise customers are not going all-in on any single silicon vendor, and Google knows it. The real appeal here is economic, not architectural. As agent fleets grow, inference cost starts to dominate infrastructure spend, and Google is pricing aggressively enough to pressure Azure and AWS inference offerings within a couple of quarters. We really need to consider what that means for existing contractual commitments for consumption renewing in the second half of this year.
Agentic Data Cloud: Because Agents Fail Without Context
The Knowledge Catalog, Cross-Cloud Lakehouse (built on open Apache Iceberg), Smart Storage, and Data Agent Kit were packaged together as the Agentic Data Cloud. The pitch is pretty honest about the real bottleneck in enterprise AI adoption: Most organizational data is siloed, poorly tagged, and basically unfit for agent consumption. Knowledge Catalog runs continuously in the background to enrich data with business context. Cross-Cloud Lakehouse lets agents query data sitting in AWS, Azure, Salesforce, Workday, or Palantir without first being moved to Google. Google is essentially acknowledging that most enterprises are multicloud and will stay that way. Whether IT leaders benefit from that openness depends on how Google supports it as the offering matures. We have seen this movie before, and it does not always end with the neutrality the marketing promised.
Agentic Defense: The Wiz Integration Lands
The $32 billion Wiz acquisition closed in March, and Google used Next ’26 to show what it paid for. The packaging under the Agentic Defense banner is pretty tight. Red Agent hunts for exploitable vulnerabilities, including inside your own enterprise agents; Blue Agent investigates threats; and Green Agent autogenerates code-level remediations. Google Security Operations now processes over five million alerts per month with an AI triage agent that reduces a 30-minute manual analysis to about 60 seconds. The AI Bill of Materials (AI-BOM) capability, which automatically inventories AI frameworks, models, and IDE extensions across your environment, could be one of the most important shadow-AI governance tools announced at any vendor event this year. If you’re losing sleep over the agents your business units have already deployed without telling you, this might be worth a closer look.
The Partner Play: $750 Million to Get Gemini in Your Head
Google committed $750 million to partners, including embedded engineers at Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant, Deloitte, HCLTech, PwC, and TCS. That’s not chump change. It’s not symbolic, either – it will shift systems integrator incentives toward Gemini Enterprise recommendations over the next year. If your SI is whispering “Gemini” a little louder in 2026, you’ll know why.
Announcements That Were Impressive But Footnotes for Most IT Leaders
The Apple-Siri partnership, where Gemini will power the next generation of Siri, is about market validation, not enterprise IT. Workspace Intelligence and Workspace Studio matter mostly to organizations already on Google Workspace. The expanded 200-model Model Garden (which now includes Anthropic’s Claude alongside Gemini and open-source options) and the agent-to-agent (A2A) protocol v1.0 reaching production are important for the long-term interoperability story, but they are background noise for most CIOs this quarter.
Our Take
The takeaway from Next ’26 is that Google is no longer just selling models or a cloud. It’s selling an operating system for the agentic enterprise. That’s a bigger commitment than a simple procurement conversation, and it should be treated as one. Instead of letting the partner ecosystem nudge you into a default choice, use the next two quarters to make a deliberate one.
• Force an architectural decision before the default sets in. Decide explicitly whether your agent fleet will live on a single vendor’s integrated stack (Google, Microsoft, or AWS) or on a composed, best-of-breed stack. Either path could be defensible, but drifting into one by accident isn’t.
• Pilot the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform against a workflow with real audit requirements. The value of Agent Registry, Agent Identity, and Agent Gateway only becomes apparent when applied to a workflow with genuine compliance stakes. Finance, legal, and regulated healthcare functions are the likely testbeds. Four to six weeks is enough to learn whether the governance layer actually matches your requirements for controls.
• Use the Wiz-driven Agentic Defense story to test your current security stack. If you are already a Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, or Microsoft Defender customer, map where the new capabilities overlap and where they diverge. AI-BOM alone is worth a proof of concept for shadow AI discovery.
• Recalculate your inference TCO. TPU 8i’s pricing claims should force a refresh of your agentic cost model. If you plan to run agents at volume, model what a hybrid posture (TPU for inference, GPU for specialized workloads) looks like over two years, not just one, so you can see if and when the TCO lines cross.
• Renegotiate your SI engagements. With $750 million flowing into the partner ecosystem and forward-deployed Google engineers embedded at the top integrators, your SI’s recommendations might tilt. Ask your partner to show you the decision criteria it uses when recommending Gemini over alternatives in writing.
• Don’t confuse integration with lock-in (or lock-in with integration). Google has earned some credibility on openness this year (MCP, A2A, Iceberg, Claude and Gemma coexisting in Model Garden). Use that openness now, while the leverage is yours rather than the vendor’s.
The firms that do well in 2026 will not be the ones who picked the “right” agentic platform. They will be the ones who treated the platform decision as an architectural question, kept the option to change their mind, and built adaptive governance before the agent fleet outpaced them.
