AWS EU Sovereign Cloud Read the AWS announcement |
|
On January 15, 2026, AWS announced the availability of its European Sovereign Cloud data centers, which are physically and legally separate from the US-based company's other servers. The European Sovereign Cloud will also be managed by a new parent company that will be locally controlled in the European Union and run by EU citizens. |
ANALYST ANALYSIS |
AWS is budgeting €7.8 billion to support its AWS European Sovereign Cloud to support infrastructure, job creation, and skill development. This investment is expected to contribute €17.2 billion to the European economy through 2040 and support roughly 2,800 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses. The first data center is being built in Brandenburg, Germany, and additional data centers are to be built across other parts of Europe. The investment will help run activities run by a German company that is made up completely of EU nationals. This meets tight government and commercial criteria for handling sensitive data. The AWS approach for sovereignty and protecting data in the EU from potential enforcement of the US Cloud Act by US firms operating in Europe is unique. AWS supporters argue that the cloud offering is "physically and logically separate" from other US-controlled AWS regions, thus acting as a sovereign enabler. Critics argue that the only real way to stop the US Cloud Act is by having total jurisdictional separation. |

Anthropic Releases Its Latest Economic Index Report |
||
On January 15, 2026, Anthropic released its latest Economic Index report. This report introduces the concept of "economic primitives" which are metrics designed to measure the impact of AI on daily work. The economic primitives capture five dimensions of a human-AI conversation: 1) task complexity; 2) human and AI skills; 3) work, coursework, or personal use case; 4) the AI's level of autonomy; and 5) task success. |
ANALYST ANALYSIS |
|
The report provides analysis of millions of user interactions with Claude and revealed the following:
What was surprising and assuring was despite the focus on using AI to automate, that the collaborative and iterative use of Claude.ai produced higher task success rates (67% vs. 49%). |

Google Introduces Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to Enable Agentic AI-Based Commerce
On January 11, 2026, Google announced a new open standard, the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), for agentic commerce that enables agentic commerce across the entire shopping experience. This open standard was developed in concert with retail industry leaders, such as Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, and endorsed by more than 20 others across the ecosystem such as Adyen, American Express, Best Buy, Flipkart, Macy's Inc., Mastercard, Stripe, The Home Depot, Visa, and Zalando. | ANALYST ANALYSIS
The UCP creates a shared framework that allows agents, businesses, and payment providers to communicate seamlessly across all platforms. Rather than building separate, one-off connections for each agent, UCP makes it possible for any agent to integrate with any other. Designed for cross-industry use, UCP integrates smoothly with established agentic AI standards such as the Agent2Agent (A2A), Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), and Model Context Protocol (MCP). Google is also releasing a Business Agent, an agent that takes the role of virtual assistant that can engage the customer with the persona of the brand to help drive the potential sale. These innovations are adding to the agentic AI leadership that Google is pursuing.
Apple Selects Google Gemini for Siri and Apple Intelligence
On January 12, 2025, Apple announced that it selected Google Gemini as its strategic AI model for Siri. In a joint statement, the companies announced: "Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year." | ANALYST ANALYSIS
This announcement is welcome news for Apple. It allows the company to continue to focus on its core strength, the user experience. Previous attempts by Apple to deliver its own AI ecosystem have been unsuccessful, demonstrating this is not the company's core strength. For Google, this validates and strengthens their AI leadership. With Apple and Android users using Gemini, the only potential concern would be antitrust efforts to break their monopoly on cellphones. The big loser of this announcement is OpenAI. While previously selected as an AI model for the Apple Intelligence ecosystem, that role has been removed. This will make it more difficult for Open AI to scale its consumer-based revenue and may also make them more dependent on Microsoft as a channel to leverage for consumers
OpenAI Releases AI Healthcare Offerings for Consumers and Healthcare InstitutionsRead the ChatGPT Health announcement Read the OpenAI Healthcare announcement |
||
On January 7, 2026, OpenAI announced limited availability of ChatGPT Health, targeting consumers. According to data collected by OpenAI, over 230 million people globally ask health and wellness related questions to ChatGPT every week. On January 8, 2026, OpenAI announced OpenAI Healthcare, targeting healthcare institutions. |
ANALYST ANALYSIS |
|
ChatGPT Health targets consumers and any medical records, data and wellness information shared can be kept private and encrypted. OpenAI has stated that this new offering should not be used to provide diagnosis nor treatments, nor should it be viewed as replacement for health professionals. OpenAI Healthcare is a set of products, leveraging GPT-5, targeting healthcare organizations so they can deliver more consistent, higher quality, and HIPAA-compliant care. Four days later, on January 11, Anthropic announced its AI offering for healthcare and for life sciences. Not surprisingly, AI in healthcare is a rapidly growing industry with forecasts of a more than hundred-billion-dollar market in just the next few years. |
