With the advent of containers in the emerging technology space and accompanying market excitement, there is much confusion over how to manage applications in legacy virtualized environments. Compound this with the ever-increasing number of converged and hyper-converged offerings, and CIOs may be left scratching their heads. This note contrasts the go-to market strategies of VMware and Nutanix to illustrate two viable, but competing, approaches to the management of application workloads in the future. The key takeaway is that CIOs need to start planning for the long term now or risk defaulting to their incumbent vendors’ aspirations.
