JetBrains Announces New Collaboration Tool: Space

JetBrains, a software development company, has announced a new integrated team collaboration environment aimed at DevOps engineers and project managers: Space. Currently only operating as an early access program and first-come, first-served basis, Space will form a hub for teams with an integrated development environment (IDE) into a scalable DevOps platform.

Space does not aim to be a best-of-breed app like other similar collaboration tools in this particular marketplace; such tools include GitHub, Confluence, Azure DevOps, and Trello. Instead, Space intends to be a broader suite, a one-stop hub for all DevOps engineers and project managers.

Notable functionalities include:

  • Git-based version control
  • Code review
  • IDE integration
  • Automation (CI/CD) based on Kotlin Scripting
  • Package repositories
  • Planning tools
  • Issue tracker
  • Chats
  • Blogs
  • Meetings
  • Team directory

Our Take

Space was born out of JetBrains own internal needs to collaborate better and more efficiently with a DevOps focus. Though Space intends to be a suite, it carves out a niche area of the market by focusing on specific IT needs. Moreover, Space responds to end-user need for rationalizing the now-saturated collaboration tool marketplace.

Of course, how successful Space will be is anyone’s guess at the moment. Space is not yet ready for widespread deployment. Interested members are advised to observe Space’s growth in the meantime, pursuing this platform once it matures. Indeed, despite the range of functionalities currently available, JetBrains lists many more planned functionalities to come.
