Avaya has gone full throttle into the cloud, reinforced by these significant improvements to Avaya Spaces. Avaya sees its customer base and target market migrating to cloud-based telephony services, and Avaya Spaces forms one part of Avaya’s restructuring for the future of this space.
A key feature of Avaya Spaces that deserves emphasis is its interoperability options. Rather than seek out its own spot in the market with unique users, Avaya Spaces has been made to integrate with a wide range of popular collaboration suites and apps. This is the right move: rather than end users facing a “this or that” choice for tool use (a choice could go against the vendor), vendors are preferring to offer a “this and that” choice. That is, no matter what collaboration suite an end user is operating, Avaya Spaces will be an option. As other collaboration tools like Zoom are finding, interoperability is a good survival tool in an immature market, rather than trying to go it alone.
This points to a broader future trend in the collaboration marketplace. In a mixed-vendor market, where various offerings end up giving end users overlapping capabilities, end users are demanding vendors make their solutions interoperable so that their collaboration toolset can be integrated into a unified platform. The benefit of doing so for end users is reducing confusion from knowing which app to use when, improving productivity as a result. The benefit for vendors, in turn, is that organizations will not feel limited to choosing just one vendor over another – if both integrate well, offering their own unique collaboration capabilities, both vendors can be considered.
