Common challenges include:

  • Poor responsiveness: IT has challenges in responding to and meeting customer needs
  • Business perception of IT: IT is perceived as support function and not as a strategic partner
  • Unclear roles: IT staff are uncertain of accountabilities; functions overlap and work “falls between the cracks”
  • Spread of extra-organizational units: Extreme reliance on task forces, committees, special projects, and/or shadow organizations

This workshop will help to address those challenges:

  • Determine capabilities needed within the IT organization to align to the business strategy
  • Create an organizational structure to address the objectives of the business and IT
  • Develop a transition plan to implement the organizational structure changes

Module 1: Conduct a current state assessment

The Purpose

  • Agree on the goals and objectives of the workshop
  • Reach consensus on the drivers and outcomes of the organizational redesign initiative
  • Identify the organizational structure capability gap
  • Define the key IT capabilities
  • Develop an organizational design assessment tool

Module 2: Create an outline of the target IT organization

The Purpose

  • Define the units of work that will be part of the target IT organization
  • Create a sketch of the target IT organization based on an understanding of required capabilities, and organizational design archetypes
  • Assign the work to be done to work units
  • Assess the design outline based on the design assessment framework

  • After creating the design outline, you will have the foundation for building the target IT organizational structure in more detail.

Module 3: Design the target IT organizational structure

The Purpose

  • Define the key roles required in the target IT organization
  • Identify key competencies and the level of competence required for each role

Module 4: Plan the transition

The Purpose

  • Undertake a change management assessment
  • Develop a transition strategy

Module 5: Create the Change Leader Action Plan

The Purpose

  • Assess the readiness of leadership for the organizational transition
  • Identify the key stakeholders and how to best engage them
  • Prepare an action plan for the role of the Change Leader in leading the transition

  • After completing this module, you will be in a position to initiate the organizational transition.
