JIRA 8.0 Addresses the Need for Speed

Atlassian recently released JIRA 8.0 with the promise of much quicker application processing time and the ability to use the application on personal electronic devices.

According to Atlassian this means several software performance improvements including:

  • Quicker access to Agile boards (especially large ones that contain greater than 10,000 issues) – a reported improvement of 2 to 21 times faster.
  • Faster Jira Query Language (JQL) searches – now up to 31% faster.
  • Shorter re-indexing timeframes that now take 71% less time.
  • Decreased indexes by up to 48%.

Additionally, Atlassian has also introduced a number of UX-based improvements including:

  • Clearer email notifications and priorities.
  • User interface improvements.
  • Mobile device access that is iOS and Android compatible.
  • Improved JIRA admin experience.
  • Easier data center maintenance.

Our Take

The improvements promised by Atlassian with the latest release of JIRA are much needed changes for those who have used the tool for any length of time.

The provision of a “Pre-upgrade planning page” is a beneficial tool to help with this latest upgrade.

There have been two subsequent releases (8.0.1 and 8.0.2) to address multiple deployment issues, but the software appears to be stable with no further releases since March 2019.
