Digital Guardian Sees Behavior Analytics as the Future of DLP

Digital Guardian has been a data loss prevention (DLP) leader for some time, so we’d all do well to listen when it says the future of DLP will focus on data, user behavior, and conditions of use.

Digital Guardian’s DLP solution is already incorporating user and entity behavior analytics, meaning that it looks at the patterns of use, the conditions under which data is used, and the users or entities using the data.

The idea is to reduce user friction (i.e. false positives) and to bolster data protection by taking a holistic view of data use and not just of the data itself, which is only a part of the story. Taken together, this functionality can speed up incident detection and remediation time – perhaps even before an incident has happened, as irregular data use helps you spot an issue before it really starts.

Digital Guardian’s DLP solution currently offers behavior analytics and it’s something we can expect the company to double down on going forward, as Digital Guardian sees these analytics as the future of DLP technology.

Our Take

DLP solutions are getting more and more advanced, but we should be wary about relying on them too much. Is Digital Guardian’s behavior analytics functionality cool? Yes, it is. But DLP products should be used only as a last line of defense.

One day, we may be able to control DLP entirely from software solutions. Until then, DLP programs will be most successful when they incorporate data classification, which helps narrow the range of data access variables and thus boosts the performance of any DLP solution.
