Dassault Is the Latest PLM Vendor to Harness Automation

Dassault has announced a partnership with ABB, making it the third major PLM vendor to collaborate with an industrial automation expert. The stated goal of the partnership is to focus on factory automation, robots, process industry automation, and solutions for smart buildings.

Dassault and ABB will demonstrate their new application at the Hannover Messe trade fair April 1-5.

The partnership is representative of a larger trend within the PLM landscape. Siemens made a similar move with the development of its Digital Factory group, which was essentially a merger of its PLM and automation divisions. PTC, another major PLM vendor, also made a similar move by establishing a formal partnership with industrial automation giant Rockwell Automation.

Our Take

The integration of PLM with an automation platform benefits customers. Manufacturing organizations are leveraging the new capabilities such as digital twins to develop more product iterations in a production cycle and decrease downtime. However, the reach of these partnerships may make it more difficult for customers to exit their PLM vendor software ecosystems.
