What really sets it apart are its global network of source mitigation, real-time threat detection, automatic mitigation techniques, 24/7 expert support, and cost-effective pricing options. Other solutions are available, but the deep integration into the AWS ecosystem and focus on automated protection make AWS Shield a compelling reason to choose AWS for organizations using AWS.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

One of the most favored aspects of me about AWS Shield is its seamless integration with other AWS services. This integration allows for a comprehensive and efficient security solution, as it can be easily incorporated into existing AWS infrastructures. Additionally, AWS Shield's automated threat detection and mitigation capabilities are highly valued by customers, as they minimize the need for manual intervention and reduce the risk of human error. This automation also helps to ensure that attacks are addressed promptly and effectively, minimizing potential downtime and financial losses.

What do you dislike most about this product?

Its advanced tier can be costly, especially for smaller-scale operations. Additionally, its primary focus on AWS environments limits its flexibility for multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud setups. Although it offers automated protection, some users may prefer more granular control over mitigation techniques. Lastly, like any automated system, there's a risk of false positives, which can lead to unnecessary mitigation actions. It's essential to carefully assess specific needs and budget constraints before adopting AWS Shield.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

According to me, AWS Shield is recommended to organizations that are heavily invested in AWS and prioritize automated, proactive DDoS protection. If you have a complex AWS infrastructure and require a robust, hands-off solution to safeguard your applications, AWS Shield is an excellent choice.

What differentiates AWS Shield from other similar products?

AWS Shield Standard provides automatic protection against many common network and transport layer attacks, while AWS Shield Advanced offers additional detection and mitigation capabilities, detailed attack visibility, and access to the AWS Shield Response Team for eligible incidents.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

My favorite thing about AWS Shield is the combination of automated DDoS mitigation, integration with the AWS ecosystem, and reduced operational effort. It provides a practical way to strengthen application availability without making day-to-day security management unnecessarily complicated. However, I would still consider it one part of a broader security strategy rather than a complete security solution, since identity protection, vulnerability management, application security, and continuous monitoring require additional controls.

What do you dislike most about this product?

When an application experiences unusual traffic, security teams need enough context to distinguish legitimate traffic spikes from malicious activity and determine whether further investigation is necessary. Shield Advanced provides additional attack visibility, but teams still need to review the available information and correlate it with logs, application metrics, and other security events. I would prefer a more unified view that makes it easier to understand the potential impact of an attack, identify the affected resources, and coordinate the response without switching between several AWS services.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

My recommendation would be to understand the pricing and service requirements before moving into production. Businesses should review the costs associated with Shield Advanced and any related AWS services they plan to use. It is also important to consider the organization's existing infrastructure and whether the team has the technical knowledge to configure and manage the different security components effectively.
