Really Simple Syndication (RSS) can help legal professionals improve their productivity, reduce research time, stay up-to-date on current events, and sift through news content more efficiently. In fact, RSS made Business 2.0's list as the smartest technology for 2006.

Understanding RSS

RSS feeds are short pieces of XML-based code that users can download from participating sites. This code contains headlines, which are actually updatable links to the dynamic, freely syndicated content of participating sites. On the client side, interpreting the code requires an RSS reader or news aggregator. Because the code is XML, the RSS feeds can be supported across a wide variety of platforms. As users increase their familiarity with RSS they will increasingly notice icons linking to RSS feeds on many of the Web sites they visit. Icons typically appear as:
