Storage, like networking and processing, has always been software defined in that it is software that makes any computing device – whether server, switch, or storage array – more than a humming space heater. But decoupling the software that manages and controls storage from the physical media can enable better agility, automation, scalability, and cost savings from storage using commodity hardware.

What about solutions like Maxta or Atlantis.? They come in two flavours. HCI and SDS. Where do they fit in this evaluation?

Thanks for your comment. The list of vendors was intended to be neither a ranking, nor an exhaustive list. Both the HCI and SDS markets have over 20+ vendors known to our analysts and are still seeing new entrants. Those mentioned in these briefs were selected based on the level of interest they generate when discussing these solutions with our members.

Our upcoming research on the subject of enterprise storage modernization will look at these use cases more closely to align them with your enterprise storage strategy. Their mention here was to raise awareness to the trends so that they can become points of consideration for a long-term infrastructure roadmap.

If you’d like to discuss these topics, including those two vendors you mentioned, in more depth, feel free to schedule a call with an analyst who covers this area.
