Office 365 has enabled employees to work anywhere, anytime, on any device, but it has also made it more difficult to centrally manage all possible devices and the data residing both on them and in the cloud. Data loss when using Office 365 is becoming a concern for many organizations as established data retention policies may not guarantee the ability to recover data that has been accidentally or purposefully deleted.

Be sure you have absolute trust in your O365 admin's capabilities if choosing not to backup. An accidental policy deployment permanently deleted all messages older than 90 days from the mailbox rather than the intended "Deleted Items". The result was a funky restore of all mailbox objects into the inbox. That includes all folder and deleted items being restored into the same inbox folder. Better than nothing but we re-evaluated the need for backups after that and have since deployed a solution and a new O365 admin.
