Just start using the metrics that the infrastructure team is already recording. Move away from intuitive, reactive decisions by recording and analyzing the metrics over time.

  • Most IT departments already record key KPIs such as percent utilization of storage, peak bandwidth, etc. Start recording the measurements over time and analyzing changes in critical business resources.
  • Keep it simple; most organizations can use the Capacity Analysis Tool as the basis for capacity planning.
  • Re-think IT resources based on the business processes that those services enable.
