The downtime policy ensures that systems be taken offline to maintain and improve system performance, safeguard data, or to respond to emergency situations. The goal of this policy is to explain in those circumstances during which downtime may occur anticipated durations of downtime events and procedures for notifying affected users.

Risks Addressed by Policy:

  • Information systems will not be properly maintained, leading to high failure rates.
  • More frequent replacement and repairs of company IT equipment.
  • Increased expenses of IT equipment.

This is a great starter document in the event you do not already have a plan like this in place. Having just started a new shop within an organization that has never had a formal IT department, this is something you wouldn't necessarily remember to include when writing the policies. It took me maybe 30 minutes from download to policy proposal.
