New leaders must be aware of their business environment so they can begin thinking strategically about department plans. A SWOT analysis is one of the most common and applicable frameworks for examining such a situation.

Use the SWOT analysis template to evaluate the following:

  • Strengths of the department or business unit.
  • Weaknesses of the department or business unit.
  • Opportunities in the market.
  • Threats in the market.

The SWOT analysis can be built upon as leaders gain more knowledge and elicit feedback, and the information within will inform business and strategic planning documents in the first 100 days and beyond.
