Unplanned service requests often delay planned activities. This storyboard identifies several approaches that can reduce the frequency of squabbles and the politics often associated with setting IT priorities when IT is in the driver’s seat.
The recommended alternatives for organizations that currently place the burden of prioritization on IT include the following:
- Have senior management collectively prioritize major project initiatives.
- Establish, with senior management, a framework for deciding which special requests have high priority.
- Control the work assigned to individual staff so that prioritization is not left in their hands.
By shifting decision rights on priorities away from IT and IT staff towards senior management, the process of establishing and stabilizing priorities is much improved. Use this storyboard to address challenges in the current demand management process.
