Debates rage around market share of non-Windows operating systems (OSes). A recent Info-Tech Research Group survey finds that Windows is nearly ubiquitous, but many IT shops find uses for alternative OSes alongside the Microsoft offerings.
Key findings include:
- Less than half of enterprises run only Microsoft Windows in the server room.
- One-sixth of enterprises run flavors of all three major OS competitors: Windows, Linux, and UNIX.
- IT shops with 20 or more employees average 40 server-based deployments of Microsoft Windows.
Enterprise IT leaders will use this note to revisit the desirability of engaging in a multi-platform data center and compare the current number of Windows deployments to peer experiences.
