Underdogs in the Server Virtualization Market Promise to Heat Things Up in 2012

Info-Tech Research Group ranks VMware Server Virtualization overall “Champion” with Citrix and Microsoft nipping at their heels and looking to 2012 as a big year

London, ON – May 11, 2011 – A recent report published by Info-Tech Research Group ranked VMware as overall “Champion” of the Server Virtualization landscape.  The market leader beat out Citrix and Microsoft once again achieving over 80% market share owing to recent innovations around internal cloud enablement and public cloud integration.  But while VMware has been focusing on internal cloud, their competitors have been developing in other areas and Info-Tech predicts will begin to close the market share gap in 2012.

Competitors such as Citrix and Microsoft have fully emerged as legitimate alternatives to VMware and Info-Tech Research Group sees both being used to virtualize production servers.  All the players are looking to make their server virtualization a building block of internal cloud infrastructures.

“Things get very interesting at the number two spot,” said Chris O’Connor, Research Analyst with Info-Tech Research Group and author of the report titled, Select a Server Virtualization Solution.  “Microsoft and Citrix have narrowed VMware’s lead around functionality for basic server consolidation and virtual infrastructure management.  In addition, both have promised to make this the year where they move beyond management into internal cloud capabilities, such as self service, metering and automation.”

Customers should also anticipate the entrance of a fourth player in this space with the arrival of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV).  While not yet ready for internal cloud, RHEV provides consolidation and management fit to compete with the big three.
