
John Sloan
Senior Research Analyst
John Sloan has been a Research Analyst with Info-Tech Research Group since 1999. His areas of research involvement include data center infrastructure management, storage technologies, server and storage virtualization, and disaster recovery planning. Currently, he is focusing on emerging networked storage options available to IT managers of small- to mid-sized enterprises.
Prior to joining Info-Tech, John accumulated more than 12 years experience as a journalist specializing in information technology and business. He also has extensive experience in corporate communications, particularly in using the Web as a corporate communications tool. He was an early leader in developing governance practices and editorial procedures for using Web technologies.
As an Internet communications evangelist in the 1990s, John led a corporate IT governance task force at The University of Western Ontario, which established the first governing policies for the Web at that institution and developed an award-winning Web site. In 2001, he developed and taught a course on using the Web for a professional development program for working corporate communications professionals.
Some major Info-Tech publications authored or co-authored by John include: Building a Comprehensive Disaster Recovery Plan; Strategic IT Planning & Governance; Mastering Management: Essential Tools and Techniques for IT Professionals; and Commoditization: An IT Manager's Survival Guide. He was a pioneer analyst for Info-Tech's advisory products, Info-Tech Advisor and McLean Report, and continues to contribute regularly to these publications on a wide range of topics. He also contributes regularly to Info-Tech's "Info-Tech Insights" column in Processor Magazine.
John has spoken on topics ranging from understanding and working with IT managers to taking a strategic planning approach to e-learning technology selection. In 2004, he was a judge for the Software & Information Industry Association CODIE Awards in the corporate e-learning products category. He has also served as a judge for the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education Prix D'Excellence award in the categories of "Web Communications" and "Innovation on a Shoestring."
John holds a Master's degree in Journalism from The University of Western Ontario.
