Layoff numbers are on the increase: 35% of respondents to a recent Info-Tech survey said they have completed, are currently executing, or are planning layoffs. But not all organizations are conducting layoffs to reduce costs – many are using the opportunity to deal with undesirable staff.

Info-Tech asked nearly 200 IT leaders to rank the importance of 13 factors in determining who is laid off in the IT department. Table 1 shows those factors listed in order of importance.
