Financial Post - ATI Fusion chip lights up AMD future

23-Sep-09 The light at the end of the tunnel for Advanced Micro Devices Inc. may very well be emanating from Markham, Ont.

Over the past 3½ years, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based microchip design company has racked up losses totalling more than US$7-billion as it struggled to keep pace with industry giant Intel Corp. and the global credit crunch dried up technology spending around the world.

But thanks to technologies being developed in the labs just north of Toronto of what was once ATI Technologies -- the Canadian company AMD purchased for US$5.4-billion in 2006 -- a certain optimism about the future is permeating AMD.
