Debates rage around whether small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) find much use for non-Windows operating systems (OSes). A recent Info-Tech Research Group survey finds that only 57% of these shops use Windows alone.

Key findings include:

  • Over 32% of small shops run Linux in the server room.
  • One-fifth of small enterprises run flavors of all three major OS competitors: Windows, Linux, and UNIX.
  • Small enterprise server rooms average between 10 and 30 Windows instances, with as many as 50 being reported.

Enterprise IT leaders can use this note to revisit the desirability of engaging in a multi-platform data center and compare the current number of Windows deployments to peer experiences.
