April 7, 2017: See the In-Room Tablets Vendor Landscape for an updated look at the market.

Despite the inherent flexibility of their design, tablet PCs have failed to gain significant traction. Still, this platform presents some compelling benefits for a range of specifically targeted business and usage scenarios. Hardware price reductions and increased availability will combine with direct integration into Microsoft Windows Vista to further drive acceptance of tablet-based platforms.

Implementing tablet PCs into existing client-side mobile infrastructure is a more involved process than simply deploying the hardware. This research note will focus on the following key components of a successful tablet PC implementation:

  • Deployment and training.
  • Application development.
  • End-user support.

By adapting existing deployment, development, and support processes to support tablet PCs, the enterprise optimizes the potential for successfully deriving value from them.
