The enterprise mobile workforce requirement to move seamlessly between wired and wireless services negatively impacts network availability requirements. This is particularly true for cellular services and wireless hotspots that remain out of enterprise control.

IT should consider the following areas when rethinking network availability needs – especially for those applications that require 99% availability:

  • Wireless network availability weak points.
  • Pending Federal Communications Commission (FCC) backup power rules.
  • The impact on business applications designed for 99% availability.

Wireless operators do not provide availability guarantees because of the lack of fault tolerant designs and the associated costs to implement them. As a result, performance problems are likely – especially for wireless-enabled business applications.
