Evaluate and Fine Tune Performance Management to Raise QoS

Author(s): John Stehman

Performance management consists of many distinct functions, including traffic analysis/measurement, performance metrics monitoring/analysis, network modeling/planning, and ongoing optimization. The objective is to deliver and maintain the speed, reliability, and bandwidth required by business applications. Although different applications require various blends of bandwidth, latency, and reliability, the following focus points will help enterprises stay ahead in the performance management game.

  • End-to-end application response time monitoring.
  • Network traffic analysis.
  • Network capacity planning.

Most enterprises employ some vestige of performance management using separate tools and/or modules in their network management platforms. In either case, QoS requirements are dynamic and subject to change based on application needs. Thus, performance management functionality must be evaluated and continuously tuned to support enterprise needs.
