In the past, there was no easy way to create a very compact but expandable compute facility for remote offices or small enterprises. Tower and rack-mount servers took little space but required external networking infrastructure for connectivity. Expandability was limited without adding more rack or tower boxes. For most enterprises the mainframe was not an option and, even when it was, it still required external infrastructure and storage.
