During a crisis, communication is extremely important in order to calm fears, deliver timely information, and ultimately get operations back on track. However, few managers are adept at crafting concise messages on very short notice. Use message maps as a vehicle to simplify communications and to direct appropriate actions.

The Method Behind the Madness

Developed by Dr. Robert Chandler of Pepperdine University, message mapping is a method of writing designed to create emergency notifications for their constituents in a simple, digestible format. The information contained in a message map is highly condensed, which from a psychological standpoint is desirable in a crisis situation.
