Management is the value differentiator in virtualization. However, management itself has different layers. For example, in seeking to be the operating system of the Cloud, VMware is going beyond virtual device management into virtual resource management.
For so-called internal clouds, virtualization is about more than hypervisors and virtual machines. It is an operating system for scalable consolidated infrastructure. VMware has used terms like Data Center OS and Operating System of the Cloud to describe the role of its vSphere product. This will require more sophisticated tools than are required to manage individual virtual machines.
