Many enterprises have very lean IT departments to keep departmental budgets under control. Info-Tech recently surveyed 188 enterprises about their IT cost management initiatives. This group included 33 enterprises from the professional services industry. Use Info-Tech's analysis to guide future decisions concerning IT cost control or cost reduction plans.

Servers and Storage Wins the IT Cost Management Contest

When it comes to deciding where to focus cost management efforts, professional services firms show a clear preference for the following three IT service areas

  • Servers and storage
  • Application development
  • Discretionary spending

These focus areas are typical across all industry verticals. Close to 50% (high focus) of all surveyed enterprises have taken cost management initiatives in the area of servers and storage followed by 45% in discretionary spending and 37% in application development. Interestingly, unlike professional services, peers in other industries placed a larger emphasis on network and telephony (44% ranked as high focus) than on application development to manage IT's cost.
