With 80 new clients between 3Q10 and 3Q11, and 86% year-over-year MIPS growth, System z is experiencing significant growth. This video describes some of the reasons for renewed interest in mainframes, such as:
- IBM’s hybrid approach to mission critical computing is enabling System z to be more-easily integrated into a heterogeneous environment. For example, System z has supported Linux for many years, and the latest System z releases (z196 and z114) now also support Windows Server.
- Mainframes can be used to facilitate massive server consolidation. For example, the z196 can replace up to 3,000 commodity servers.
- Mainframes are also now more accessible to mid-market enterprises, with the release of the zEnterprise 114. The z114 is a smaller-scale mainframe that provides the equivalent capacity of 300 commodity servers, but also has a lower price point, starting at $75K.
The mainframe still has its challenges, but in the minds of many organizations the benefits outweigh the risks.
