At Salesforce.com’s 2011 annual “Dreamforce” conference, the company announced or released several new cloud-based products and services well beyond its core CRM platforms.  These include:

  • Significant enhancements to its “Chatter” social collaboration product, making it fully competitive in the collaboration platform market.
  • General availability of its Database.com “database as a service”, delivering on the promise of “Force.com” becoming a credible platform as a service (PaaS) solution.

Salesforce.com is indeed delivering on its promise to become a broad enterprise application and platform services provider in the cloud, beyond just CRM. Organizations should evaluate Salesforce.com for needs beyond CRM, but realize the sky is full other clouds too, not the least of which are Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, IBM and Amazon, setting the stage for a stormy competition.
