Back Up to the Cloud, From the Cloud, With the Cloud – The Scoop on AWS Backup
Whether this is an attempt to further monopolize the cloud market or a convenient solution for customers who are looking to reduce their vendor portfolio, the new AWS Backup does provide a straightforward way to backup cloud-native and on-premises data.
Announced earlier this year, AWS Backup will assist with the automation and management of your backups. Using a central console, users can create policy-driven backup plans. With AWS Backup, users can monitor the state of their backup, check for compliance, and search for and restore data.
AWS Backup can support the following:
- EBS volumes
- EFS file systems
- RDS Databases
- DynamoDB tables
- Storage Gateway to S3
Supporting Storage Gateway allows AWS Backup to support the backup of on-premises data to the cloud. AWS Backup can also send older backups to Amazon Glacier to help with cost management. Each backup a user creates includes rules around schedule, frequency, and backup window. Governance around storage tiers and retention policies can be configured, and all backups are grouped into vaults and encrypted.
As the trend towards cloud environments continues to grow, data protection becomes a high priority. As a result of this trend, many traditional backup vendors have made a strong push to strengthen their cloud partnerships and enable backing up to, from, and within the cloud.Now major cloud vendors are jumping into this market. Traditional vendors such as Commvault, Veeam, and Veritas will focus on the differentiation of a broader feature set and multi-cloud capabilities. But organizations with a large and growing Amazon estate will be attracted to the convenience offered by the AWS Backup solution.
