The Yahoo! User Interface (YUI) Library is an open-source collection of UI controls and utilities written in JavaScript and also includes several very useful Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) templates. Yahoo! began developing the library as a framework to support its Web properties in 2005 and made it publicly available in early 2006. Version 2.5.1 is discussed here.

The organization's Web development team is likely to turn to JavaScript to provide front-end interactivity in the following situations:

  • The existing Web presence requires a more dynamic user experience than can be delivered with basic HTML.
  • There is a need to implement a Rich Internet Application (RIA) for the public Web site or intranet and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) was selected as the preferred development framework.
