Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) would have been hard pressed to live up to early predictions that it would be virtually ubiquitous by 2008-2009. After a period of pessimism about the technology, it seems that more realistic expectations have settled in.

WiMAX makes a lot of sense for a variety of deployment scenarios, and with backing from the likes of Intel it looks like the on-again, off-again speculation on the technology is on-again, but this time with somewhat lofty – but much more attainable – deployment and subscriber numbers.
