In the event of a disaster, critical business applications must be brought back online quickly and restored to the most recent backup point. Therefore, calculating recovery time metrics for each application is an important goal for any Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP). This research note discusses:

  • The relationship between recovery objectives and availability.
  • How to calculate RPO, RTO, MTTR, MTTF, and DPW.
  • Reconciling recovery objectives with the technology required to achieve them.

Recovery of IT services after a data loss event cannot be accomplished unless the IT organization has developed recovery objectives for those services. Define what is required to meet recovery objectives and whether these goals are realistic.
