Delivering applications, files, and email between locations over a WAN is becoming increasingly challenging. As file and email attachment sizes grow, and applications demand more bandwidth, performance degrades and WAN bandwidth requirements and costs escalate. WAN optimization technologies can significantly improve performance and reduce bandwidth utilization and costs. This research note addresses the costs and benefits of WAN optimization, particularly with respect to:
- Containing WAN bandwidth costs.
- Improved application performance.
- Centralizing IT resources.
WAN optimization appliances can have a very positive impact on site-to-site WAN performance. Positive ROI and less than one year paybacks are not uncommon.
