Market share comparisons between server operating systems grab headlines. However, far from seeing one solution besting all others, Info-Tech believes OS heterogeneity will increase, empowered by centralized management tools.
As evidence of this trend, notice these highlights from an Info-Tech survey of large enterprises (more than 500 employees):
- 96% of large enterprises run Microsoft Windows.
- Only 17% of large enterprise IT shops run Microsoft Windows alone.
- 40% to 47% of large enterprises also run Linux, UNIX, or some IBM flavor.
This note examines these findings and provides context for the IT leader's OS choices.
