IT wants to be a partner in organizational innovation, especially when the organization wants to leverage disruptive technology, but times and resources are largely spent trying to keep the lights on. At the same time, business processes need to evolve quickly for the organization to remain competitive. If IT is not perceived as an innovation partner, business units will bypass IT when generating solutions or leveraging emerging/disruptive technologies.

Often, organizations begin by implementing an innovation program or mandate. They decide to identify challenges around business processes, and attempt to leverage disruptive technologies to resolve them. This is a risky approach.
