Build the Ultimate IT Operating Model

Est. publication: September 2015

It’s time to open up the black box of IT. Without an effective operating model, it can be difficult to explain how IT enables the business. An operating model illustrates all the things that IT does to enable the business.

Your Challenge

As a CIO, you are faced with:

  • A lack of clarity about IT’s role in the organization.
  • Confusion about IT’s core capabilities and the value they provide to the organization.
  • A change in corporate strategy that requires a re-evaluation of IT’s core capabilities.
  • Push-back from business leaders who are questioning the effectiveness of IT’s operating model.
  • Difficulty in identifying the IT capabilities that require investment or enhancement in order to better enable the business.

Our Solution

There are two approaches to this project. You can either design and publish your current operating model, or transform your operating model by comparing IT’s current capabilities to the capabilities required by the business:

Approach 1: Define your current operating model

Step 1: Assess your current operating model and decide if you need to re-design it.

Step 2: Use Info-Tech Research Group’s methodology to define the current capabilities of your IT department.

Step 3: Design and build your operating model.

Step 3: Publish your operating model.

Approach 2: Design a target state operating model and develop a roadmap to help you achieve it

Step 1: Assess your current operating model and decide if you need to re-design it.

Step 2: Use Info-Tech Research Group’s methodology to define the current capabilities of your IT department.

Step 3: Define the organization’s customer facing capabilities, and identify the IT capabilities that are required to enable them.

Step 4: Design and build a target state operating model.

Step 5: Identify the gaps between your current and target capabilities.

Step 6: Develop a roadmap of initiatives that will allow your IT organization to achieve the target state operating model. Achieving your target state operating model may involve several different initiatives. We will help you focus your efforts on the capabilities that matter most to the business.

Step 7: Launch your roadmap and monitor progress.

Step 8: Publish your operating model.
