In a recent Info-Tech survey, 32% of participants indicated that they successfully implemented a Business Intelligence (BI) technology and another 16% are in the process. Deploying BI technology secures the foundation for future decision-making applications. However, optimizing the application delivery process starting with Project Initiation (PI) is fundamental to driving positive ROI for any BI tool and its applications.

PI is a process by which ideas are evaluated, documented, estimated, resourced and launched as projects. It typically consists of a planning or business-case phase and a pre-project preparation phase. Figure 1 illustrates the typical high-level steps that constitute the project initiation process.
