Certain IT decisions (such as technical standards) should be made by IT, while others, such as technical vendor selection, should involve IT to a major degree. Other decisions, such as budget and project prioritization, should be driven by business management, rather than assumed by IT.

This storyboard will help IT leaders:

  • Determine what role IT should take in typical decision-making situations.
  • Diagnose challenges to decision-making in the organization that are caused by an inappropriate decision-making role for IT.
  • Take steps to increase IT influence when IT is either left out of decisions that it should be making or should at least influence.
  • Engage those stakeholders who need to take responsibility for certain decisions or who at least need to be involved in the decision.

Inappropriately assigned decision rights involving Information Technology can create major grief for IT Management; fix the problem.
