Canada is one of the few countries to have passed adequate federal legislation related to protecting personal information. However, unreliable enforcement and a complicated processing system make the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) less effective than it can be. PIPEDA outlines how organizations should collect, use, and disclose personal information, as well as how to facilitate the use of electronic documents in business transactions. The ten fair information principles in Table 1 have contributed to Canada's high security standing in the international playing field, especially influencing the EU's decision for granting approval regarding dataadequacy for cross-border exchange.
