Due to economic conditions, many senior staff members are unemployed or stymied in their career advancement. One way to increase the odds of retaining one's job, or of getting a promotion, is to demonstrate value to corporate management, the business units, and the IT organization. Consider the following activities to achieve this objective:

  • Discuss potential consultative roles with IT management.
  • Consult with business units to identify needs and concern.
  • Assume a proactive role - become visible to the organization.

Senior staff members should become proactive problem solvers and apply their technical skills to solve business unit problems and help IT to achieve its key objectives. Although this requires additional time and effort, the end results could be career enhancing.
