The value of an IT continuity plan cannot be understated. You need to know what assets you have, the specific risks to those assets, and any steps you have taken to secure them. Your continuity plan must begin with a clear idea of how IT assets are vulnerable to threats, and what level of protection you have in place.
The Corporate Asset Inventory template creates an exhaustive list of all IT assets in the organization, including:
- Hardware and software
- Routers and firewalls
- Desktops
- Contact information
- All additional IT assets
Be sure to keep the inventory in a secure location once it is completed, so you don't get caught in the dark. IT needs to be able to respond to unplanned downtime and disaster situations. The inability to do so will result in lost data, lost assets, and lost money.
