When considering connectivity options for remote workers the majority of enterprises will examine tunneled solutions, such as IPSec or PPTP VPNs, or portal/presentation solutions, typically in the form of SSL VPNs. But there are other options that warrant consideration such as Mobile VPNs, virtual desktops, Windows Terminal Services, or Citrix XenApp (formerly Presentation Server). Focus on meeting the needs of remote workers rather than specific VPN technologies when selecting connectivity options.

Determine What Users Need Access To

The advantage of an SSL VPN solution is that access can be managed at a very granular level depending on the user. For instance, one employee might have access to the bare minimum, e-mail, office applications, and the enterprise CRM system, while another would have access to all enterprise applications and file shares.
