Physical security is an important part of an enterprise's overall information security mission. Often overlooked areas of physical security are the wiring closets that house critical network infrastructure. Protect wiring closets to improve and maintain network reliability and security.

The Wiring Closet Problem

In a defense-in-depth security model, physical security, and more specifically, wiring closets are the most vulnerable and overlooked components. Securing wiring closets can be difficult since their locations are often outside of a centralized server room. If physical access to a network can be achieved, gaining logical access to the information on that network is guaranteed. Given the high threat level that improperly secured wiring closets represent, IT managers need to take the proper steps to lock them down.
