The ability to explore the ramifications of disaster-level events is a critical skill that all IT departments should develop. Use scenario planning as a valuable tool for testing the organization's disaster recovery plan (DRP).

What Is Scenario Planning?

The purpose of scenario planning is to determine if a company's strategies are strong enough to ensure IT continuity in the face of a disaster or unplanned downtime. It is an exercise in speculation, where multiple worst-case situations are imagined and response strategies for dealing with them are mapped out. These can be scenarios for technological, economic, political, or environmental calamities.
